American Idol 2012: Did Elise Testone Rock It Again This Week? (VIDEO)

On American Idol 2012 last week, contestant Elise Testone was a huge hit with her performance of “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin. Honestly, I think that performance was one of the very best of the whole American Idol season 11 run so far. The judges certainly loved it and the voters seemed to approve as well. So how did the raspy, blond power-house singer do this week?

Last week was probably Elise Testone’s best performance of the season so far with her rocking rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” — a song at least one judge didn’t even think anyone could possibly cover without failing horribly. The audience loved it, the judges loved it and the American Idol 2012 voters obviously loved it, as Elise made it through to this week.

Unfortunately, Wednesday night on American Idol 80’s night, Elise wanted a “Whole Lotta Love” again but did not fare nearly so well this time around. I was rather happy about the idea of Elise Testone singing Foreigner‘s “I Want to Know What Love Is” when I heard her song choice for the evening. After it was through, however, I found myself wishing she had ignored Jimmy Iovine‘s direction in rehearsals and stuck with her original song choice of Leonard Cohen‘s “Hallelujah.” That’s saying something, because I think “Hallelujah” is one of the most over-covered songs of the modern era and I really don’t want to hear it sung by anyone ever again this decade.

Normally one of the strongest singers of American Idol 2012, Elise Testone just fell flat on Wednesday. No, even worse, she fell flat and sharp — all over the place. For some crazy reason, she just could not seem to stay on pitch throughout the song. The judges were not pleased. Steven Tyler bluntly said he thought the song just was not right for her (the kiss of death!). Jennifer Lopez tried to play it up sweetly by telling Elise she could “sing anything” with that “powerhouse voice” of hers. However, she countered by saying “it wasn’t totally right every single moment, and that’s all it was.” I love that you can always tell when Jennifer Lopez is dissing someone, because she always calls them “beautiful” while she is ripping them up so sweetly.

Randy Jackson probably summed it up best when he told Elise that it just was “not your greatest performance.” Even more direct, Jackson told her the song was “out of tune everywhere for me; honestly.”

Sadly, it was really one of Elise’s worst performances of the American Idol 2012 season, which could mean a sudden drop to the bottom three for Elise Testone despite last week’s stellar performance.

If Elise is really lucky, everyone will forget about her solo performance and just judge her based on her duet of the evening with Phillip Phillips. Their performance of “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty was right on the money.
