American Idol 2012 Recap: Top 7 Perform Again (VIDEOS)

On American Idol 2012 Wednesday night, the top 7 contestants will perform once again, but this time there will be no last minute save for the person who ends up at the bottom.

Last week on the American Idol 2012 elimination results show, petite powerhouse Jessica Sanchez was the shocked contestant who ended up ranked last by the voters. The judges, however, were not having any of that and cast their one and only save of the season to keep Jessica Sanchez in the competition.

This week on American Idol 2012, the contestants were tasked with singing two individual songs, one from ‘now’ (modern) and one from ‘then’ (classic). We found out the song list for the top 7, round 2 performances earlier today and it was far too predictably stuffed full of Lady Gaga, Adele and Marvin Gaye. American Idol is in serious need of a new song book.

American Idol 2012 Top 7 Performances – ‘Now’:

Hollie Cavanagh – “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele
Vote: 1-866-436-5701

Comments: I liked this performance and I really do think Hollie has an amazing voice. However, she still seemed stiff and unemotional on the song. Plus, I’m totally sick of everyone covering this song, especially when they just can’t give it the oomph of the original. Hollie needs her heart broken into a few million pieces to sing this song the right way and she just hasn’t been there yet.

Colton Dixon – “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga
Vote: 1-866-436-5702

Comments: For me this was a bit flat and the change in keys made the song sound odd. I know he was going for those chorus notes, but I just don’t think it worked all that well. Definitely not my favorite Colton performance.

Elise Testone – “No One” by Alicia Keys
Vote: 1-866-436-5703

Comments: This was a good song for Elise and I thought she sounded great on it, but she still needs to figure out how to be the total package. Just standing in front of the wind machine having her hair fly around does not a star performance make.

Phillip Phillips – “U Got It Bad” by Usher”
Vote: 1-866-436-5704

Comments: When I found out what song Phillip was going to perform, I thought it was weird. After I heard it, I still thought it was weird, but kind of cool anyway. This was an absolute improvement over the past few weeks, even if it maybe wasn’t totally perfect. I think Phillip has redeemed himself this week though with this song. Let’s hope the second one is as good.

Jessica Sanchez – “Fallen” by Alicia Keys
Vote: 1-866-436-5705

Comments: I never really want to like Jessica. She just isn’t my type of singer and the whole teeny-bopper with a diva voice doesn’t usually click with me. Still, I cannot deny this was a very strong performance and I did actually like it quite a bit. I just feel she needs more life experience to really pull off the emotional depth needed for some of the songs she does.

Skylar Laine – “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga
Vote: 1-866-436-5706

Comments: I had never heard this version of this song and it was quite a surprise. Personally, I usually hate most country music, but something about Skylar intrigues me. I thought this was kind of a fun take on Lady Gaga and I liked it, although Skylar has had much bigger performances.

Joshua Ledet – “I Believe” by Fantasia
Vote: 1-866-436-5707

Comments: This song was, predictably, a good choice for Joshua Ledet. He sounded great, he impressed the judges and he was stellar as usual. However, I would really like to hear him sing something really different and out of the box. He’s great, but I feel kind of like I’m hearing the same thing week after week.

American Idol 2012 Top 7 Performances – ‘Then’:

Hollie Cavanagh – “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield
Vote: 1-866-436-5701

Comments: I am constantly rooting for Hollie to break out of her shell and reach deep down in her soul to match up her soul with that stellar voice. unfortunately, she keeps failing to bring that emotive quality to her performances that would take her to a whole other level. Like her previous song, it wasn’t awful, but it just still lacked that extra special something that would take it from good to great. Plus, there were some obvious pitch problems yet again.

Colton Dixon – “September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire
Vote: 1-866-436-5702

Comments: I really did not like this song choice for Colton and thought it really did not show off his voice or his performing ability very well at all. I felt there were parts that were pitchy and it was an odd in between place for his voice that was neither quite rocking enough or quite soft enough. I think Colton is perfectly safe this week, but I wish he’d had stronger performances.

Elise Testone – “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye
Vote: 1-866-436-5703

Comments: This is not a song I would have chosen for Elise, but I actually quite enjoyed it. It was sexy and sultry. Plus, Elise was looser and more comfortable on stage with this song. I am really hoping her performances tonight will keep Elise from going home. She certainly deserves to be given at least another week based on her songs tonight.

Phillip Phillips – “In the Midnight Hour” by Wilson Pickett
Vote: 1-866-436-5704

Comments: This was another really good song choice tonight for Phillip, who seems to finally be rebounding after a couple of weeks of failing to impress like he did earlier in the competition. With his performances tonight, Phillip Phillips might just find himself back in the position of being considered a front-runner. Bad news for Elise I think as it puts her in more danger of going home, but good news for him.

Jessica Sanchez – “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding
Vote: 1-866-436-5705

Comments: I did not love this song choice for Jessica. It was totally not as strong for her as the first song of the evening and it just did not showcase her pipes. The song is a classic, but it just wasn’t right for her and I think the judges didn’t love it all that much either really. Still, I don’t think Jessica is in any danger after last week’s insanity. Every Jessica fan on the planet will be voting this week.

Skylar Laine – “Heart It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye
Vote: 1-866-436-5706

Comments: Once again it is an odd song to go with considering how strong Skylar is with the country thing. Still, I actually liked this performance and thought she shined through on it despite this being one of the most overdone songs ever. Skylar had a good night tonight overall and it could possibly save her from being in the bottom or even going home.

Joshua Ledet – “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
Vote: 1-866-436-5707

Comments: Joshua was really great again but I am going to risk being blasted by saying that I think he really needs to try something a little more out there and a little more challenging. His voice is so strong that he could probably sing just about anything, but he keeps staying in the same vibe every week. I want to see him really go out there next week and surprise everyone with something wild.

Because of the use of the save last week, we typically would expect this week to see two contestants go home on the American Idol elimination results show Thursday night as has happened in previous years. However, since Jermaine Jones was disqualified earlier in the season, that could mean there will be only elimination this week, rather than the two eliminations that usually follow the use of the judge’s save.

  1. Who in the world made those comments? Because of people like you, someone like Jessica won’t win. You americans, are so racists. You don’t like asian people.Remember how good was Allison Iraheta? She didn’t make it to the finals. Why?  Because she was filipino, born in USA.
You guys only like country singers, that’s why Scotty won last year.If Skylar wins this year, American Idol will suck forever.

  2. Right now, all of them are good.I just hope Skylar won’t win.Don’t get me wrong, she’s good but she’s too much of a country singer.
Elise is a lot better than her, the other girls too. Not to mention Colton, Phil and Joshua.
