American Idol 2012: Top 7 Week Recap (VIDEO)

The American Idol 2012 top 7 performed ‘songs from this decade’ on Wednesday night. While overall one of my favorite nights so far on this season of Idol (mostly due to the song choices), there were some contestants who failed to impress the judges with their performances this week. Thankfully, there were also a few American Idol 2012 competitors who soared with their modern era song selections.

Join me for our American Idol 2012: Top 7 Week Recap and share your thoughts on who you think will make it through to the next round!

Skylar Laine – “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You” by Kelly Pickler

Song Choice: Spot on
Rating: 8 of 10
Judges Reaction: Loved it across the board.
Select Quote: Steven Tyler – “The crows may crow but the hens deliver the goods, just great.”

VOTE: Skylar Laine – “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You” by Kelly Pickler

Colton Dixon – “Love the Way You Lie” by Skylar Grey

Song Choice: Great, but not perfect
Rating: 7 of 10
Judges Reaction: Very positive, but they did spend a whole lot of time talking about Colton’s jacket rather than his song.
Select Quote: Jennifer Lopez – You’re able to take any song and make it your own. It’s the mark of a good artist.”

VOTE: Colton Dixon – “Love the Way You Lie” by Skylar Grey

Before we had the next solo performance, Elise Testone and Phillip Phillips team up to sing a duet of “Somebody I Used To Know” by Gotye. The judges thought Elise actually overwhelmed Phillip a bit, but liked the overall performance.

“I love the feel that your duet brought to that song,” Jennifer Lopez said. “Elise sang the mess out of that song, there was a little imbalance there, but it was great.”

Jessica Sanchez – “Stuttering” by Jazmine Sullivan

Song Choice: A little off
Rating: 7 1/2 of 10
Judges Reaction: Strongly positive, especially from Randy Jackson, but not quite as glowing as usual.
Select Quote: Jennifer Lopez – “You have an amazing opportunity to take America on a ride. I would love to see some Joshua type performances, take us on that ride.”

VOTE: Jessica Sanchez – “Stuttering” by Jazmine Sullivan

Josua Ledet – “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars

Song Choice: Almost perfect
Rating: 8 1/2 of 10
Judges Reaction: Over the moon as usual with Joshua. All three gave high praise and Randy Jackson was almost in ecstasy.
Select Quote: Randy Jackson – “I don’t even know what to say, you were unbelievable, you have the look and the vocals, you are really in the zone.”

VOTE: Joshua Ledet – “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars

After Joshua, there was another break in the solo performances for a duet between Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine on “Don’t You Want To Stay Here a Little While” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson.

The judges were nice, but not strong with the praise. Jennifer Lopez said she thought they “did a really nice job with it.” Steven Tyler was a little more of a fan, saying the two “just made love singing together, it was beautiful.” Randy Jackson, however, was more forward about his feelings. “I love you both dearly, I thought that was okay for me.”

Hollie Cavanagh – “Perfect” by Pink

Song Choice: Not so good
Rating: 6 of 10
Judges Reaction: Not very positive from any of the judges. When the judges start commenting on how pretty you were, you know you sucked.
Select Quote: Jennifer Lopez – “I see you fighting, you sang beautifully tonight, we’ll se how it all pans out, I’m rooting for you.”

VOTE: Hollie Cavanagh – “Perfect” by Pink
1-866-436-5705

Phillip Phillips – “Give a Little More” by Maroon 5

Song Choice: Not his best
Rating: 6
Judges Reaction: The judges were not thrilled with this song choice or the performance as a whole.
Select Quote: Randy Jackson – “I think that it was not much of a wow type of performance.”

VOTE: Phillip Phillips – “Give A Little More” by Maroon 5

Before the last solo performance of the night, there was another break for a trio performance of “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson, sung by Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh. You just had to feel a little bad for Hollie put together with Joshua and Jessica because she sounded kind of weak in comparison, although the judges were nice and praised her along with the other two.

Jennifer Lopez thought it was a great performance and said “this is the season of the big voices, really amazing.” Steven Tyler also praised the three contestants and Randy Jackson said it was a “dope” performance, but he did have to “give the edge to Josh.”

Elise Testone – “You and I” by Lady Gaga

Song Choice: Hot Damn
Rating: 8 1/2
Judges Reaction: Huge hit with all three judges, Elise killed it.
Select Quote: Randy Jackson – Elise is back, that was the perfect song for you, you needed a moment and you got one, dope vocals there.”

VOTE: Elise Testone – “You and I” by Lady Gaga
