After a two-year dry spell, American Idol season three winner Fantasia Barrino has finally dropped a new single. The R&B track, “Lose to Win,” debuted on the radio Dec. 19 and will be released on iTunes January 8.
The new song from Fantasia Barrino reflects on lessons learned in dealing with a difficult romantic relationship. They say you should write what you know, and Fantasia certainly knows all about the drama of a romance gone wrong.
“Have you ever needed someone so bad?/ But he ain’t willing to make it last/ Sometimes you gotta lose to win again,” Barrino sings in the chorus of “Lose to Win.” A report on the song’s release, Rap-Up.com called the Grammy Award winner’s new song an “empowering anthem.” The upbeat tune seems to share an uplifting message of finding your way after losing your heart to the wrong person.
Fantasia Barrino made national headlines in 2010 after it was revealed she had a lengthy affair with Antwaun Cook. She became embroiled in a nasty divorce battle between Cook and his then wife Paula Cook, who claimed the singer knowingly went after her husband despite knowing he was married.
Barrino was hospitalized later that year after she attempted suicide with an overdose of aspirin and sleeping pills, according to People. Barrino said on VH1’s Behind the Music she “just wanted out” of the mess her life had fallen into. After giving birth to her second child in 2011, fathered by Antwaun Cook, Barrino appears to be back on a positive path and plans to release a new album in March 2013.
With all the controversy surrounding Fantasia Barrino’s personal life over the past few years, it’s nice to see her finally getting attention again for her considerable talent instead of her intimate relationships. Hopefully this will just the be first of many new successes for the former American Idol star.
