Avatar Box Office Creeps Up on World Record
Despite a 16 percent drop off in viewers this week, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar came out on top at the weekend box office yet again. Avatar earned $36 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s total box office earnings to $1.8 billion.

Avatar now trails James Cameron’s other epic movie, Titanic, by only $7 million at the box office. It seems almost a given at this point that Avatar will shortly break the record for the highest grossing film of all time.
The film has already managed to take the title of the largest grossing film overseas, bringing in $1.288 billion outside of the U.S. – beating Titanic’s record of $1.242 billion. Avatar has not yet managed to break Titanic’s domestic box office record so far.
The downside to all this box office love? We’re sure to be plagued with Avatar knock-offs for years to come. Sigh. Including, more than likely, a far less interesting sequel that will totally fail to capture the charm and intrigue of the first film.

LOL. I see you know very little about movies. 16% drop in todays film market is incredible. For a giant, supposedly front-loaded block buster action film, it’s hard to believe. That it is a USD36 million weekend is stratospheric. That this comes off a giant holiday weekend before it means I need a stiff drink.

While I agree with a portion of your comment, I think you are arguing about a case of semantics rather than meaning.
The film was #1 DESPITE a drop off in viewers, that doesn’t mean the viewership that remained wasn’t impressive. I think that’s a given, considering the stated numbers.

How do you know that the sequel will be far less interesting? I agree that it will be hard for any sequel to beat the original movie, but I believe it has been accomplished before. Moreover, there will be a ready crowd of millions and milions of fans just waiting for the sequel.

Remember James Cameron directed Terminator 2, which a lot of people think was better than the first and with that sequel introduced new special effects. I can’t imagine what is in store for a sequel to Avatar.

Whereas I agree it’s a visual treat, the dialogue and plot were unimaginative… the director missed the boat on so many opportunities and turned to impressive sight gags over deep material.

I love the Avatar 3D film, particularly the story line, not solely it brings a very new feelings but eye opening thoughts of humanity. I heard the New Avatar 2 is comming soon, cannot wait to see it again…!
