The jury is still out in the Casey Anthony trial and no one can know for sure when they will emerge to declare a verdict. Casey Anthony is accused of murder in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony. Prosecutors allege she killed her daughter by suffocating her with duct tape over her mouth and nose. Anthony’s defense team claims the toddler accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool.
Casey Anthony has been charged with first degree murder of Caylee Anthony. If she is convicted of that charge, she could possibly face the death penalty. However, the jury in the case could decide to drop the first degree murder charge and find Anthony guilty on a lesser count.
The Casey Anthony jury, which has been sequestered in an Orlando hotel, met briefly with Judge Belvin Perry Tuesday morning for instructions on how to proceed with deliberations. He told jurors they had the option to find Casey Anthony guilty of lesser charges if they should decide to, including second degree murder, manslaughter or third degree felony murder. None of those charges would carry a possible death sentence.
Anthony also faces charges of aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter and multiple counts of lying to law enforcement.
