Chris Cuomo was considered a top contender for the Good Morning America anchor slot left open by Diane Sawyer‘s move to ABC’s World News Tonight. News hit the Net on Wednesday that position would go instead to former White House aide George Stephanopoulos.

Cuomo foreshadowed his resignation from GMA on Monday by posting on his Twitter feed: “Yes, change is coming. I invite it, honestly. All is good. Will tell more soon.”

Announcing his departure Thursday morning, Cuomo said he is excited about his new position with 20/20 but sad to leave GMA. “It is a dream job for a journalist like me, but it was a very difficult decision, because I am leaving a special place and crew and all of you,” Cuomo said. “You are all part of my family.”

Cuomo will be replaced on Good Morning America by correspondent Juju Chang. Friday will be the last day on GMA for both Diane Sawyer and Chris Cuomo.

  1. Couldn’t believe when I saw Chris was gone. I must have missed his announcement so when I saw the commercials this weekend with Juju & George I had to look it up. Chris’s wit & humor really made the show a hit. How he & Sam joked around and poked fun of themselves & made the ladies laugh was hilarious. I don’t see the same humor or relaxed atmosphere today but maybe in time. We do watch 20/20 so that is a bonus there now!!

  2. I agree with Stephanie, I don’t see the same chemistry. I like George S. and he WILL be an asset if the mornings news is really serious or if keen political insite is needed, but most mornings the the humorous banter between Chris and Sam was welcomed. And when needed, Chris could do a serous interview with any heavy weight with no problem. I never liked those cooking segments toward the end any of the morning shows, but they may become painful to watch with George S doing them! As Stephanie said, maybe in time…

  3. I miss Chris a lot, he and Sam were great, George does not have the same repore, but I am sure he will work at it.. As usual ABC makes a wrong choice …. going back to NBC in the a.m.
