Corey Haim Death Caused by Pneumonia Not Drugs

Actor Corey Haim died from complications of pneumonia and an enlarged heart, the Los Angeles County coroner announced in a press statement on Tuesday. While traces of eight prescription and over-the-counter medications were found in Haim’s system, none are believed to have contributed to his death.

The Corey Haim autopsy report officially lists the former child star’s cause of death as natural causes from “community-acquired pneumonia.” Haim died on March 10 after collapsing in his mother’s apartment. He had reportedly been ill with flu-like symptoms in the days before his death.

Haim struggled with drug and alcohol addiction much of his life and allegedly obtained over 500 prescription pills through “doctor shopping” in the two months before his death. California Attorney General Jerry Brown said in April that Haim had visited multiple doctors to acquire prescriptions for Valium, Xanax, Vicodin, Oxycontin and other medications.

Trace amounts of eight prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including tranquilizers, marijuana and cold medications were found in Haim’s body. The coroner’s office, however, says none of the drugs were “at a level that would have contributed to his death.”

In addition to the damage caused to Haim’s respiratory system from the pneumonia, the actor also had an enlarged heart, partially blocked coronary arteries and an enlarged liver.
