Discovery and ESPN 3D Television on the Way

ESPN 3-D television is on the way! ESPN announced Tuesday it will launch ESPN 3-D, the industry’s first 3-D network in June. ESPN plans to air at least 85 live sporting events in 3-D during the network’s first year.

Discovery Communications has also announced the company is planning to launch a 3-D television channel with IMAX and Sony, set to debut in 2011. Discover claims the network will be the first 24/7 dedicated 3-D television channel.

3-D technology fell out of favor a while back but recently found new success with a handful of high-profile film adaptations aired in 3-D, including James Cameron‘s billion-dollar earning Avatar.

ESPN executive vice president Sean Bratches said the new 3-D network will “be a meaningful step to drive adoption of 3D television sets and afford opportunities for our affiliates to create value through new product offerings, and our advertisers, who want fresh sponsorship opportunities.”

While we certainly think it might be cool to watch the home team bash folks in live 3-D, we aren’t so excited about those 3-D commercials sure to follow. Honestly, we really don’t need 3-D maxi pads or hemorrhoid cream invading our living room space!
