Hundreds of mourners joined the Duggar family on Wednesday afternoon to memorialize the unborn child Michelle Duggar lost in a miscarriage during her 20th pregnancy. The reality TV stars of 19 Kids and Counting named the miscarried fetus and passed out ‘artistic’ photos of the baby fetus at the memorial.
The Duggar family learned of the Michelle Duggar miscarriage during a routine checkup on December 9th. They were informed by the doctor that he could not detect a heartbeat and the fetus had died. “We had just been talking about baby names last night and they were getting excited about naming a boy or a girl,” Duggar said in a press statement. “It has been a real sad disappointment.”
Michelle Duggar and Jim Bob Duggar nearly lost their 19th child as well when daughter Josie Brooklyn was born two years ago at 25 weeks and weighed only 1 Lb. The couple has faced increasing controvery over their continued refusal to stop trying to have children despite nearly losing their 19th child and now suffering through a Michelle Duggar miscarriage of their 20th. The family believes in the idea that god will gift them with as many children as he decides and they should not interfere with this by using birth control.
Because the fetus was already partially formed, Michelle Duggar had to deliver the baby stillborn. To soothe their grief over the loss, the Duggars took photos of the fetus, which they named Jubilee Shalom, for the family. One of these somehow made it online via Twitter, an ‘artistic’ photo of the stillborn baby’s feet with the message: “There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an inmprint on the world. In respect for the family, we are not reposting the photos here, although they can easily be found online elsewhere.
It is not clear exactly who posted photos from the memorial online originally, but the family had no intent to keep them private. Other photos of the fetus’s tiny hands and feet were also shown and distributed to mourners at the memorial service for Jubilee. The photos were taken by the nonprofit organization Now I Lay Me Down, which is dedicated to helping families through the loss of babies and miscarriages.
“I feel a great sorrow and grief, and yet at the same time I have a peace in my heart,” Michelle said during the memorial, according to People. “This is so sad, but I have peace.
“I really believe that God sees the bigger picture,” Jim Bob Duggar said. “I hope that her short life can encourage other people who have gone through things like this. It was very healing, and we have precious memories.”
