Meredith Baxter, known best for her role as Elyse Keaton on Family Ties, has come out as a lesbian. After being spotted on board a lesbian cruise recently, Meredith Baxter came out Wednesday during an interview on the Today Show.
The Family Ties mom was spotted onboard a Sweet lesbian Caribbean cruise last month, launching speculation about her sexual orientation. Meredith Baxter appeared on the Today Show on Wednesday to address the rumors.
“I am a lesbian, and it was a later-in-life recognition,” Baxter told Matt Lauer on Today. “Some people would say, well, you’re living a lie and, you know, the truth is — not at all. This has only been for the past seven years.”
Baxter said she has not been trying to hide her sexual orientation, saying she and her partner of four years “live very out lives in Los Angeles.”
The 62-year-old actress said she first began a relationship with a woman seven years ago. “I got involved with someone I never expected to get involved with, and it was that kind of awakening.”
Baxter said she and her partner, building contractor Nancy Locke, have been together for four years. To avoid further tabloid speculation about her private life, Baxter decided to come out publicly.
