HBO has taken a drastic move and pulled the now infamous Game of Thrones George Bush head episode from DVD sales and the HBO streaming GO service. Apparently HBO went utterly apesh*t when the whole Game of Thrones George Bush head debacle hit the press this past week.

The whole silly drama started when Game of Thrones show creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff pointed out the Game of Thrones George Bush head on a spike that appears in season 1, episode 10 during the season one DVD commentary. The head bore a remarkable similarity to the former president, but was topped with a long, scraggly wig. Well, according to Weiss and Benioff, it really was a model of George Bush’s head.

“George Bush’s head appears in a couple of beheading scenes,” the two said in their commentary on the episode. “It’s not a choice; it’s not a political statement. We just had to use whatever heads we had lying around.” Yeah, well, if they say so…

Whether it was a snafu that no one should have ever mentioned, or an actual political statement brought into the light, HBO had a total meltdown when it hit the press. So both HBO and the show producers ended up issuing an apology for the Game of Thrones George Bush head on a spike.

“We use a lot of prosthetic body parts on the show: heads, arms, etc.,” Benioff and Weiss explained. “We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk. After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush.”

“In the DVD commentary, we mentioned this, though we should not have,” the duo continued. “We meant no disrespect to the former president and apologize if anything we said or did suggested otherwise.”

That really should have been enough and the controversy was already fading out of the spotlight. Until HBO suddenly made it worse. In a totally ridiculous move, HBO decided to pull the whole Game of Thrones George Bush head episode from the DVD sales and from the HBO GO service.

I’m assuming that they’ll do a recut of the episode to eliminate any and all angles of the George Bush head and put it back out eventually. Meanwhile though, anyone who was trying to watch their episodes in order will probably just end up pirating it anyway, considering how rampant Game of Thrones piracy is already.

Smooth move HBO.
