The official G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer video has finally been released by Paramount and it comes with a big shock. Unlike the previous G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie back in 2009, this action-packed, explosive sequel looks like it might just be surprisingly awesome.

Since the original launch of the toy line way back in 1964, little boys and girls have imagined the patriotic adventures of G.I. Joe. Many of us grew up with G.I. Joe at the height of the brand’s popularity in the 1980′s when the toys were translated to animated characters for TV. Fans of G.I. Joe waited impatiently for decades to finally see the action figures brought to live action life on the big screen.

Unfortunately, many fans ended up a bit disappointed with the 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie directed by Stephen Sommers. Even before the movie hit theaters, fans were already strongly criticizing leaked drafts of the script. Although G.I. Joe comic book writer Larry Hama was brought on as a creative consultant for rewrites, the film still received lackluster, negative reviews from fans and critics.

Still, Hollywood cares less for critics than it does for cash, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opened at the top of the box office and earned over $302 million worldwide. So Paramount went right ahead and ordered up a sequel. G.I. Joe: Retaliation, directed by Jon Chu, is set to be released on June 29, 2012.

Watching the official trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, it was hard to love the movie even before it went public. With the G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer trailer video, however, it’s a whole different story. We can only hope it will be a strong indication of good things to come. After all, this movie does have all the right components if they are just mixed together properly. We’ve got crazy action and all kinds of blowing things up. We have more Channing Tatum looking super hot. We have Adrianne Palicki inspiring lustful daydreams. we have Dwayne Johnson aka ‘The Rock‘ raising hell. We have ninjas — ninjas! And last, but never least, we have legacy action hero Bruce Willis bringing in some old school yippie ki-yay, motherf—ker.

To put it succinctly, this trailer is bad-ass. If the movie can fulfill the promise of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer trailer, this will be the film that truly reflects those imaginary adventures fans had as children blowing up their G.I. Joes with firecrackers in the backyard. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that this won’t be one of those films where all the best stuff is in the trailer and the rest of the movie sucks like a giant black hole.
