“Friday Night Lights” star Taylor Kitsch is looking exceptionally hot in the latest “John Carter” movie trailer ten minute clip. Based on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, “John Carter” stars Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, and Samantha Morton. The film launches in theaters on March 9.

Disney’s “John Carter” is a big risk for the family friendly movie studio, which reportedly pumped nearly a quarter of a billion dollars into the film adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic science fiction series. Taylor Kitsch, of “Friday Night Lights” fame, plays the title hero. Lynn Collins plays his love interest, the beautiful princess Dejah Thoris.

A former American Civil War Confederate captain, John Carter finds himself suddenly transported to Mars (aka Barsoom), in the midst of a terrible war. The consummate hero type, John Carter decides he has to save the princess and her people from their enemies.

For me, as a classic science fiction lover and a strong admirer of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series, I find myself torn in watching this “John Carter” movie trailer video. on the one hand, I’m excited to see this classic story finally make it to the big screen in such a huge way. On the other hand, I really wish it had been made by some other studio than Disney.

Having “John Carter” Disney-fied loses a lot in the translation. In particular, I anticipate the overtones of racial conflict from the original series will be non-existent. So, I’m sure, will be any of Burroughs’ obvious abhorrence of the abuse of power and hypocrisy found in organized religion.

In other words, from what I can tell so far from the “John Carter” movie trailer above and the history of all things Disney, Burroughs’ thoughtful, intellectual and philosophical masterworks of science fiction has basically been converted into a superficial, special-effects heavy bit of commercialized fluff meant to rake in as much cash as possible from the masses.
