American Idol Last Night: Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox Duet Rocks!

Once again, most of American Idol last night was one step above torture to watch. Which is sad. We really hoped ‘movie night’ on Idol would be a blast. Thankfully, the Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze duet brought us at least one moment of  American Idol glory to enjoy.

The final four of American Idol took to the stage last night under the mentorship of Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. We don’t really get – or care about – the whole artist/contestant t-shirt thing. Especially since Michael Lynche was the only one Foxx gave a ‘contestant’ shirt rather than an ‘artist’ shirt. Not only was it rude, but if anyone deserved the diss, it was definitely Casey James.

With his passionless and flat rendition of “Mrs. Robinson”, Casey James was the worst of the night by far. Unfortunately, he didn’t redeem himself at all during his duet with Michael Lynche. Although, as Simon Cowell said, both duets of the night were a “million times better” than the solo performances.

That’s certainly true for Michael Lynche as well. We still have a fond place in our hearts for the big guy, but his take on Michael Jackson‘s “Will You Be There” just made us want to be somewhere else.

In the duet with James on “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman”, Lynche was certainly better, though still not stellar. On a side note, Ellen DeGeneres‘ comment on their duet was definitely the best from the judges last night: “As a matter of fact, yes, I have loved a woman.” Even funnier was the slightly stunned moment of reaction from the other judges, contestants and the audience. Too amusing.

Crystal Bowersox picked it up this week with her performance of “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack and it was certainly one of the more enjoyable moments of the night. We still feel it lacked the spark we’ve grown to love from her though. Something was just missing and it left us wanting.

Dewyze failed to impress with his lame rendition of Seal‘s “Kiss From a Rose”, but luckily most people aren’t going to judge his performances from last night by his solo song.

Thankfully, Crystal Bowersox’s duet with Lee Dewyze didn’t leave us wanting like her solo song. This is the kind of music Dewyze’s voice was made for and he and Bowersox smoked the song “Falling Slowly” from Once. While it wasn’t a perfect performance, it was far and away the best song of the night. It’s downloading on our iTunes as we speak.

Although, we do have to wonder if Crystal Bowersox might have more than just a bit of a “musical” crush on Dewyze. She certainly did spend a lot of time fondling his instrument while the judges were speaking. Then again, maybe she just wants to steal his guitar…

  1. way off base, man; Casey is the only one who was actually on key and gave a great performance with a bit of twist on Mrs. Robinson; as uaul, Lee was mega pitchy and Big Mike mega cheesy – sorry

  2. Falling Slowly is one of my favorite songs — glad they picked it. Would like to see them take more time with it though & sound a bit more intimate.

  3. She wasn’t fondling his instrument, she was lowering it because Lee kept blocking her face with his guitar.

  4. Crystal and Lee’s duet was good, not OMG. But since this is the weakest season ever it sounded like something else. I personally don’t even care who wins at this point: all of them have enormous flaws as singers and I think Casey will be the best seller afterwards because he is insanely good-looking. But only because of that.
