A hugely powerful 7.6 Costa Rica earthquake has left at least two dead and dozens injured. The Costa Rica earthquake tore apart buildings, knocked out power and set off landslides. A brief tsunami warning was cancelled.
According to the Red Cross, at least two people died as a result of the Costa Rica earthquake, including a woman who died of a heart attack and a man who was crushed by a wall at a construction site.
At least several dozen others were reportedly injured in the Costa Rica earthquake, according to reports on Costa Rican television. On the whole, however, the earthquake did not cause mass destruction. The most important thing is to remain calm, there is no major damage,” Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla said.
The 7.6 magnitude quake hit overnight and was reportedly felt as far away as Panama and Nicaragua. The epicenter was located about 90 miles from the capital of San Jose in western Costa Rica.
The last major Costa Rica earthquake struck in January 2009 and killed 40 people.
