Actress Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital Monday night for an injury she received during her Dancing With the Stars 2012 dance routine. Gilbert is reportedly doing fine, but recovering from a mild concussion and whiplash.
During her paso doble with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Melissa Gilbert appeared to hit her head on the floor during a tricky move when he was slinging her around at top speed. Gilbert managed to get through receiving her scores for the dance, but began feeling unwell after the adrenaline from the dance wore off.
“(Melissa) had some concussion-like symptoms after she got her scores,” Maksim’s brother, Val Chmerkovskiy, told CNN. “She was a little nauseous and dizzy, so she decided to go to the hospital.” Fellow contestant Gavin DeGraw reportedly carried Gilbert down the stairs from the skybox to take her to waiting medical help. Gilber later thanked the singer on Twitter for his chivalry, saying “@GavinDeGraw bless your heart for carrying me down those stairs!”
Maksim Chmerkovskiy also took a minor dive during his dance with Melissa Gilbert. Judge Len Goodman commented after the routine that he thought the floor was too slick.
Following her trip to the hospital, Gilbert Tweeted shortly before 10 pm: “I’m alright. Mild concussion and whiplash. Very soon I will be safely home resting and being taken care of.” Thankfully, it does not look like the Melissa Gilbert injury will keep her from continuing to compete in the Dancing With the Stars season 14 cast.
Gilbert’s rep confirmed in a press statement that the actress “has a mild concussion and whiplash” from hitting her head during her dance with Maksim Chmerkkovskiy. She was released from the hospital late Monday night and is now “at home, resting comfortably and looking forward to her next dance,” her rep told CNN.
This week’s Dancing With the Stars 2012 performance was seriously rough on Melissa Gilbert. Not only is she recovering from a concussion, but she also says she was scarred for life during rehearsals for her DWTS ‘rock week’ routine.
“This week of Dancing has been a killer. I have a burn on my ankle from being dragged across the floor by Maks,” Gilbert said on People.com “It will scar. No question. The scar is mine. I earned it by working really hard. As crazy as it sounds the scar will become a symbol for me. It is a symbol of life without limitations.”
Added to all of that, Melissa Gilbert had serious surgery on her spine, which is now fused in two places, only a year and a half ago. Let’s hope Gilbert can keep herself off the injured list for the rest of Dancing With the Stars season 14.
