Animal rights organization PETA is in some trouble with the White House for using an image of First Lady Michelle Obama in one of their advertisements without her approval. The ‘Fur-Free and Fabulous!’ ad features Michelle Obama alongside Oprah Winfrey, Carrie Underwood and Tyra Banks. All of the women have publicly shunned the wearing of fur, but it seems the organization didn’t bother to ask if the ladies wanted to be spokesmodels for the PETA cause.
The White House released a statement saying that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has no authority or right to use the image of Michelle Obama in any of their advertisements. Obama’s press secretary did confirm the First Lady “does not wear fur” but said she did not consent to have her image used in PETA’s anti-fur campaign.
In a response statement, PETA said the organization has not “asked the White House to fund or promote the campaign, as they can’t do such things. However, the organization claims no wrongdoing in using the First Lady’s image to promote their cause. “The fact is that Michelle Obama has issued a statement indicating that she doesn’t wear fur, and the world should know that in PETA’s eyes, that makes her pretty fabulous.”
We think PETA is pretty fabulously ballsy for using Michelle Obama’s image to promote their campaign without her permission. And even worse, they put her behind Oprah Winfrey in the ad! Isn’t that kind of like saying Oprah is cooler than President Barack Obama‘s wife? We’re not touching that one.
