The new Doctor Who companion has been revealed! Executive Producer Stephen Moffat has announced the British actress who will replace Karen Gillan on the show is 25-year-old soap opera star Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Best known for her roles on the British soap opera Emmerdale and the drama Waterloo Road, Coleman will replace Karen Gillan as the new companion for the 11th Doctor Who (Matt Smith). Coleman also appeared in Captian America: The First Avenger.

Both Karen Gillan and co-star Arthur Darvill will leaving Doctor Who later this year when their characters, companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, face a “heartbreaking departure after one final series of roller-coaster voyages.”

Jenna-Louise Coleman, who beat out loads of hopefuls for the position of the new Doctor Who companion, is thrilled about her new gig. “I’m beyond excited, I can’t wait to get cracking,” Coleman told the Guardian newspaper. “Working alongside Matt I know is going to be enormous fun and a huge adventure.”

Doctor Who will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. Executive Producer Steven Moffat said the show this coming season will be full of thrills leading up to the anniversary and Coleman’s character will play a big part.

“Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters, Moffat said in a press statement. “Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
