Oscar Pistorius cries in court, denies Reeva Steenkamp murder charges, video below. As prosecutors formally charged Oscar Pistorius with killing model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, his family issued a statement reacting to the news Friday. “The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms,” a statement read, without elaborating, offering “deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva.”
“He would also like to express his thanks through us today for all the messages of support he has received,” Oscar Pistorius’ family members continued. “But, as stated, our thoughts and prayers today should be for Reeva and her family – regardless of the circumstances of this terrible, terrible tragedy.” Pistorius entered no plea and his family left quickly, without speaking to journalists. The case is adjourned until Tuesday, and he remains in custody.
Police said Friday that investigators conducted an autopsy on Reeva Steenkamp. Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale said the results would not be published.
In another interesting addition to the Oscar Pistorius story, in November he tweeted about what he thought was a home invasion at his residence. “Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking it’s an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry! waa,” he wrote.
Pistorius’ affinity for guns is no secret. While being profiled for The New York Times in January 2012, he made it quite clear that he was a gun enthusiast. “He [Pistorius] mentioned that a security alarm in the house had gone off the previous night, and he had grabbed his gun and tiptoed downstairs,” the article read.
That turned out to be nothing as well, but when local police responded to a report of gunshots at Pistorius’ home early Thursday, it was anything but. Upon arriving, paramedics discovered that Reeva Steenkamp, 30, had been shot several times. The model was subsequently pronounced dead. It was initially speculated that she was shot accidentally after being mistaken for an intruder, but police charged Oscar with murder of a premeditated nature.
