Bono underwent emergency back surgery last Friday after he was injured while preparing for the upcoming tour dates. He will spend time at home in Ireland recuperating before returning to the tour in August if all goes well. Bono is reportedly doing very well after surgery, but will need to undergo several months of physical therapy.

U2 had been scheduled to perform June 20 at Qwest Field in Seattle, but the band’s U.S. tour dates will now be put off until next year. U.S. shows from June 3rd to July 19th will be rescheduled for 2011. European tour dates between August 6 and October 8 so far remain unchanged.

U2’s appearance at the Glastonbury festival on June 25 has also been cancelled. An official replacement for the band at the festival has not yet been announced.

“Although we understand the disappointment to U2 fans, first and foremost comes the recovery of Bono,” Live National Global Touring CEO Arthur Fogel said in a statement on U2’s website. “Additional details on rescheduled dates will follow shortly and fans are encouraged to hold on to their tickets.”

Best wishes to Bono on a speedy recovery!

“Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training,” a message posted to U2.com reads. “He was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit in a Munich hospital, and is under the care of neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Jorg Tonn and Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt. Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home [to Ireland] to recuperate.”

The band’s next tour date in Salt Lake City on June 3rd has been postponed. It is not known yet what other dates of the U2 tour may be affected, although it is possible the band may not make their headlining gig at the Glastonbury Festival on June 25. “Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates,” the message on the band’s website says.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness said the band will “make plans to reinstate the dates as soon as possible” and urged fans to keep check on the website for more information.
