Chris Cuomo was considered a top contender for the Good Morning America anchor slot left open by Diane Sawyer‘s move to ABC’s World News Tonight. News hit the Net on Wednesday that position would go instead to former White House aide George Stephanopoulos.

Cuomo foreshadowed his resignation from GMA on Monday by posting on his Twitter feed: “Yes, change is coming. I invite it, honestly. All is good. Will tell more soon.”

Announcing his departure Thursday morning, Cuomo said he is excited about his new position with 20/20 but sad to leave GMA. “It is a dream job for a journalist like me, but it was a very difficult decision, because I am leaving a special place and crew and all of you,” Cuomo said. “You are all part of my family.”

Cuomo will be replaced on Good Morning America by correspondent Juju Chang. Friday will be the last day on GMA for both Diane Sawyer and Chris Cuomo.
