Former Emmy-winning CBS News producer Robert Halderman allegedly attempted to blackmail Late Show host David Letterman with threats he would expose the comedian’s affairs with female staff members on his show. Halderman demanded $2 million from Letterman for an alleged “screenplay” about the late night host and his sexual liaisons with his female employees.

Letterman revealed the extortion plot and his affairs with the staffers during an episode of the Late Show. Halderman was arrested after Letterman went to police about the blackmail scheme and helped authorities to gather proof against Halderman in a sting operation.

Halderman is expected to plead guilty to charges of second-degree larceny Tuesday as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors in the case. Halderman could have faced up to 15 years in jail if he had been convicted on all charges in the case. Instead, the former 48 Hours producer will reportedly receive six months in jail and 1,000 hours of community service, followed by 4 1/2 years of probation.

One less scumbag on the streets for a while in our opinion. Although, frankly, we still think David Letterman pretty much got off easy for being a total man-slut. Too bad it’s not illegal to be an asshole. Then again, the prisons would be overflowing with just about every over-privileged, narcissistic, ‘entitled’, Hollywood male (and female) out there. Oh well.

“Due to recent circumstances we will have a discussion with those in charge of placing our interns at the David Letterman show in the future,” a representative for Quinnipiac University said in a press statement. “We will diligently oversee this internship program to ensure that our interns are out of harm’s way.”

Considering Letterman’s admitted affairs with various young female staffers in his employment, we can understand the caution. However, wouldn’t it be a lot safer just to boycott sending any more impressionable young minds/bodies into the hands of a douchebag who drags along his mistresses on family vacations with his wife and son?

Stephanie Birkitt, Letterman’s former assistant and lover, reportedly accompanied the talk show host and  then girlfriend Regina Lasko on family vacations while she and Letterman were sleeping together. Even worse, Letterman and Lasko’s son was with them on the vacation – while daddy was allegedly boffing his much, much younger assistant. Eeewww!

As alleged Letterman blackmailer Robert Joe Halderman waits for his day in court, we’re thinking the Late Show host should be facing his own time in front of the judge soon. Of course, the private punishment Regina Lasko must be giving her new husband is probably even more hellish than the drama of a messy divorce!

On the Late Night with David Letterman show Thursday, Letterman spilled details of an extortion plot by Joe Halderman to bilk $2 million from the late night talk show host in exchange for keeping quiet about Letterman’s sexual affairs. Not just affairs with random women, no, Letterman said he has “had sex with women who work on the show.”

Robert J. Halderman threatened to go public with Letterman’s affairs with female staffers, including former assistant Stephanie Birkitt, and demanded $2 million to keep his mouth shut. Birkitt allegedly lived with Halderman and was reportedly instrumental in providing him with evidence in the extortion plot.

Just a note here, David Letterman just married Regina Lasko, his girlfriend of 20 years – and mother of his 6-year-old son – back in March. Letterman’s affairs with Birkitt and other female staffers were going on at least until 2002-2003 according to unverified reports. Ouch.

Letterman said he received a package three weeks ago from Robert Halderman containing proof of his sexual affairs and a note stating: “I know that you do some terrible, terrible things.” Letterman told his audience on the show Thursday night: “Sure enough, contained in the package was stuff to prove that I do terrible things.”

Instead of paying the $2 million bribe, however, Letterman went to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Letterman was reportedly instructed to write Halderman a fake check for the extortion amount. Once the fake money had exchanged hands, Halderman was arrested on charges of attempted grand larceny on Thursday.

Letterman told The Late Show audience he never thought he’d tie the knot.

“I had avoided getting married pretty good for, like, 23 years, and I … secretly felt that men who were married admired me, like I was the last of the real gunslingers.”

Looks like Regina finally roped in her gunslinging cowboy! Congrats to the hopefully happy couple!
