Hollywood invaded Broadway last night at the 2010 Tony Awards. While the Tony Awards are all about honoring the actors of the stage, many of them last night also turned out to be stars from the silver screen.
The 64th Annual Tony Awards were hosted by former Will & Grace star Sean Hayes at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday night. The Tonys bestowed their highest honors of the evening to Red (starring Alfred Moline) for Best Play and Memphis for Best Musical. Memphis also took awards for Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and Best Book of a Musical. The much talked about Green Day musical American Idiot took home awards for scenic design and lighting.
For many of the major acting awards, the Tonys this year turned its face to Hollywood. Denzel Washington nabbed Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for Fences. Oscar nominee and Washington’s co-star, Viola Davis, won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. In addition to the awards for the play’s stars, Fences also won for Best Revival of a Play.
Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones took the prize for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for A Little Night Music. During her acceptance speech, she caused a bit of a titter by pointing to husband Michael Douglas and saying: “See that man there? He’s a movie star and I get to sleep with him every night.”
Zeta-Jones later apologized backstage for her choice of words. “I just can’t believe I said something as crass as that,” Zeta-Jones said. “Boy, I could have said something worse and then I’d really be in trouble.”
Yet another Hollywood starlet took home the win for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play. Scarlett Johansson thanked her husband Ryan Reynolds for “being a theater widower” for her as she accepted her Tony Award.
