Designing Women star Dixie Carter, who passed away on Saturday, died of complications of endometrial cancer. Carter died at a hospital in Houston Saturday morning at age 70.
Dixie Carter, who had been married to actor Hal Holbrook since 1984, had apparently been battling cancer for some time. Last week, Carter reportedly dropped out of an upcoming revival of George Bernard Shaw‘s Mrs. Warren’s Profession because she was recovering from surgery. Holbrook said in a press statement that Carter’s death was a “terrible blow” to their family.

Endometrial cancer, also sometimes referred to as uterine cancer, is often linked to high levels of estrogen and is considered highly curable in its early stages. Carter’s exact cause of death has not been released, only that she died from complications of the cancer.
Carter was best known for her role as fiery Southern belle Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, but she also had a notable career in film and theater. Carter and her husband appeared together in her last film project, That Evening Sun, based on a story by novelist William Gay.
Dixie Carter is survived by her husband, daughters Ginna Carter and Mary Dixie Carter and a sister, Melba Helen Heath.
