Gang Starr MC Guru is in a coma at a New York hospital after suffering a heart attack over the weekend. 43-year-old Guru (real name Keith Elam) is reportedly expected to undergo surgery today.
Gang Starr partner DJ Premier confirmed Guru was in a coma during a phone interview with the radio show Hip Hop Nation on Sunday. “Guru is in a coma and will undergo surgery tomorrow afternoon,” he said.
MC Guru and DJ Premier rocked a score of hits earlier in their career, including “JFK to LAX” and “Above the Clouds”. The duo’s last album, The Ownerz, was released in 2003. MC Guru had reportedly recently dropped hints Gang Starr would shortly be releasing some new material.
No other details have been released so far about the rapper’s medical condition. Our thoughts go out to him, his family and friends.
