The Nielsen Co. has announced it will be closing Editor & Publisher for good after 108 years of covering the newspaper business. Nielsen has also stated it will be selling off many of the company’s trade journals, including The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.

Nielsen Business Media will also be selling off AdWeek, Brandweek, Mediaweek, The Clio Awards, Backstage and Film Journal International to e5 Global Media Holdings. e5 Global will also acquire Nielson’s Film Expo business, which includes the ShoWest, ShowEaster, Cinema Expo International and CineAsia trade shows. In addition to the shut down of Editor & Publisher, Nielson will also be closing the doors of the book review title Kirkus Reviews.
“As a result of these decisions, many of our friends and colleagues within these businesses will be leaving the company or will begin to transition to the new ownership immediately,” Nielson said in a press statement. Included in those being laid off is Editor & Publisher‘s Greg Mitchell, who confirmed the announcement Thursday on his Twitter feed, saying: “Yes, it’s true, my magazine, E&P, axed today, out of job. At office until end of year–and here, of course.”
Editor & Publisher has chronicled the newspaper and magazine industry for over 100 years. A sad day indeed.
