Out writer and co-creator Ryan Murphy accepted the best comedy award for Glee accompanied by cast members from the show, including openly lesbian star Jane Lynch. Murphy joked about Lynch’s recent engagement to longtime partner Lara Embry and praised out cast member Chris Colfer for staying true to himself.

“We have so much love for our own Chris Colfer, who at age 19 when the media came calling, Chris was true to who he is instead of waiting to announce (that he’s gay) at 40 when it doesn’t matter,” Murphy said. “This show is about arts education and inclusion, and we are using the show in a great way.”

Murphy said Colfer’s character on Glee will “never be the victim” and promised the out character will soon “have a boyfriend, and they are going to be prom kings and be popular.”

Among the other winners of the evening was out director Tom Ford, who won the GLAAD Media Award for outstanding wide-release film for A Single Man. Sadly, Ford was unable to receive the award in person since he was stick in London because of ash from Iceland’s erupting volcano.

Drew Barrymore was gifted with the Vanguard Award for her LGBT community activism and Wanda Sykes received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her work in promoting equal rights. Mississippi teenager Constance McMillen, who had her high school prom cancelled when she tried to bring her girlfriend to the dance, presented the award to Sykes in the midst of a standing ovation.
