Things Could Get Dicey with Gervais at Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais will be making a repeat performance as the host of the Golden Globes and while fans are thrilled, there’s some concern he may not … toe the line. Gervais hosted the event last year and his appearance has been called “lightening in a bottle.” Even he’s been quoted as saying there’s no way he could pull off a repeat performance. He managed to say what millions were thinking, offend people who greenlit many of the project, and generally bit the hand the fed him. No wonder he’s nervous he won’t be able to do it again.

He did say he’d like to improve on his 2011 performance – by making is 2012 appearance more outrageous than before. Said Gervais: “Not sure if I’m flattered that they trust me or insulted that they trust me. Either way…they shouldn’t trust me.”

It could really go either way. On the one hand, this has the potentially to go so horribly wrong and blow up in the producers’ faces … on the other hand it could be a huge viewership boost for NBC as people tune in to see what Gervais will do or say next.

The timing also will be good publicity for the comedian’s new TV venture, “Life’s Too Short” which will make its U.S. debut on HBO in early 2012.

Hugh Hefner defends Ricky Gervais

In this day and age when every celebrity seems to get butthurt over the slightest joke at their expense, it’s good to see that some people still have an old-school attitude toward comedy.  Hugh Hefner and his fiancée Crystal Harris were on the receiving end of a Ricky Gervais joke the other night at the Golden Globes, but instead of being outraged, Hef took it in his stride and accepted the jabs as part of a fun evening.

Hefner’s Twitter stream didn’t indicate any animosity toward Gervais, as he tweeted, “the Golden Globes was a blast. They made fun of everyone, including Crystal & me. A great night.”  He went on to say that when you lead the kind of public life that he has led, the jokes come with that, and you just have to accept it.  Well said.

Something definitely going on between Selena Gomez and Bieber

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have not said too much about rumors that they’re dating, but it’s going to be increasingly difficult to deny if they keep on leaving clues everywhere.  At the Golden Globe Awards, Justin was spotted wearing a ring that has previously been seen on Selena’s finger, and they have been spotted several times enjoying each other’s company and spending a little private time together.

What’s really scary is how fans are reacting to the news – earlier this month when the couple were spotted kissing in the Caribbean and photos surfaced, Twitter erupted with death threats against Selena.  Some people take their fandom to psychotic levels, it seems.

Eva Longoria having ups and downs but looking great

Eva Longoria‘s Twitter stream may be full of inspirational quotes she’s using to try to cheer herself up about her divorce, but this weekend at the Golden Globes she looked absolutely stunning.  Eva has been chatting with friends and fans over Twitter about what to do when life gives you lemons, and has indicated that she feels weaker at some times than others, but it didn’t show at the awards ceremony, where she looked sleek and sexy in a floor-length black gown.

Tony Parker, you messed up.  Look what you had and lost!  Eva, on the other hand, got to sit next to Zac Efron at the Golden Globes, so that probably helped lift her spirits.

Risky jokes at the Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais did a fantastic job of hosting the Golden Globe Awards last night, always pushing the limits with jokes that sometimes rubbed people the wrong way.  At one point, Gervais told a joke implying that certain Scientologists in the Hollywood community were gay actors pretending to be straight, which elicited a mixed reaction from the crowd.  Gervais wasn’t the only one taking chances with humor, though.

Robert De Niro accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Hollywood Foreign Press, and during his acceptance speech he joked that a lot of the members of the foreign press had been deported, “along with most of the waiters,” he added.  Yikes.

Robert De Niro to receive lifetime achievement award

The Golden Globes are coming around again in January, and even if there’s no other reason to watch, you should definitely tune in to see two things: Ricky Gervais hosting, and Robert De Niro collecting a lifetime achievement award, joining long-time pals Al Pacino and Martin Scorsese.

De Niro is without a doubt one of the finest actors in the history of film, and with the presentation of the award we’re bound to be treated to a fantastic montage of his greatest cinematic moments.  Also, Ricky Gervais tends to be pretty unpredictable and spontaneous, so even if the awards end up being kind of boring, the in between bits are likely to be pretty interesting.
