A minor earthquake in Illinois early Wednesday morning freaked out residents of Chicago and was felt in at least eight states. No damage or injuries from the Chicago area earthquake were reported as a result of the 3.8 magnitude Illinois earthquake, but we’re sure folks were more than a bit nervous when the ground started shaking all over, especially considering the recent horror of the 7.0 Haiti earthquake.

The Illinois earthquake was centered about 40 miles north-northwest of Chicago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Even though the earthquake was relatively minor, people from Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri and even Tennessee say they felt the shaking going on.
The USGS reports the organization has received around 10,000 reports from people claiming to have felt the earthquake and estimates up to 11 million people may have felt it.
We’re just thankful it was a very minor quake. We shudder to think what a huge earthquake could have done if it struck over such an extremely wide area.
