Jeopardy host Alex Trebek was injured on Wednesday chasing a burglar who broke into his hotel room in San Francisco. The 71-year-old game show guru said he and his wife were sleeping when a woman broke into their room around 2:30AM and stole cash and other valuables.
Not one to lay idly by while someone made off with their stuff, Alex Trebek leapt up to chase the burglar down the hotel hallway. Unfortunately, the Jeopardy host did more damage to himself than the thief.
“My Achilles tendon ruptured and I fell in an ignominious heap to the carpeting, bruising my other leg in the process,” Trebek said Wednesday afternoon when he showed up on crutches to host the National Geographic World Championship.
The burglary suspect, 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers, was caught by a security guard at the hotel. The cash and a bracelet stolen from Trebek’s hotel room were recovered, but some other items still have not been found.
Alex Trebek will have to undergo surgery on Friday and wear a cast for six weeks. Still, we’d say a 71-year-old guy who goes after a robber should probably count himself lucky he didn’t end up in a lot worse shape! Brave, yes, foolish, well, we’re going to have to say yes on that one as well.
