Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is saying goodbye to his old team and hello to his new NFL home with the Tennessee Titans. The Seahawks decided against taking on Matt Hasselbeck for another term, but the Tennessee Titans were more than happy to snatch him up with a multi-year contract.
The Seattle Seahawks informed Hasselbeck on Tuesday that the team had decided to go in a ‘different direction’ with the quarterback position this year. Hasselbeck was reportedly “dissapointed” with the decision his brother, Tim Hasselbeck, told 710 ESPN. “He wanted to remain a Seahawk and finish his career, but it’s not gonna happen. It’s part of the deal,” Hasselbeck’s brother said in the radio interview.
After the announcement Hasselbeck would not be returning to the Seattle Seahawks, mass speculation began on what team would snap the veteran up. The Miami Dophins, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals were all teams speculated about in the public forum as possible new homes for Hasselbeck.
On Wednesday morning, the Tennessee Titans reportedly agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with Matt Hasselbeck. The terms have not yet been released. No doubt the team’s management hope veteran Hasselbeck will prove a strong mentor for rookie quarterback Jake Locker. Back in April before the NFL Draft, Hasselbeck called Locker a “great kid, just a wonderful, wonderful guy,” according to the Boston Globe.
“I feel like he’s the kind of guy who would be a great leader on a football team. Just really, really gifted and talented. And I understand it could be a reality with me this year … that I’m with a guy (like Jake).â€
During his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks, Matt Hasselbeck led the team to six playoff appearances and a Super Bowl, although he has often been plagued by injuries. He’s thrown for 29,579 yards, 176 touchdowns and 128 interceptions and has been selected for three Pro Bowls.
