Why Was Michael Lynche Nearly Eliminated on American Idol Results Show?

American Idol contestant Michael Lynche lucked out big time last night when the judges decided to use their precious ‘save’ to keep him from being voted off the show. We’re glad Big Mike didn’t bite it, but we can’t help but wonder why the hell he was nearly cut in the first place?

The American Idol results show this week started off with all three remaining ladies receiving a pass through to next week. Naturally, we’re delighted that Crystal Bowersox retains her top status, but disappointed Katie Stevens didn’t at least land in the bottom three. It’s not that we dislike her; we just feel she doesn’t measure up against the better contestants. Not that Siobhan Magnus had a terrific week either; her performance for Lennon/McCartney night was mediocre at best.

Still, we didn’t really expect any of the three ladies to be sent home this week. What we were shocked about was the lineup of the guys in the bottom three. We knew things were getting dicey when perpetual bottom boy Tim Urban was placed in a group with Casey James – who is obviously a fan favorite. Michael Lynche, on the other hand, was put over in a group with Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia. Trouble brewing!

Okay, we can get that Michael Lynche might get a bottom three nod for his “Eleanor Rigby” performance this week. It was certainly not one of his best nights. But when we heard he had been voted off by the fans, we really were stunned. Of all the guys this season, Big Mike has proven he’s truly got the vocal chops and he can consistently perform on stage. Some of hisÂ performances have been the best of the season. It’s just scary that one night of wrongness could put Lynche below a near-talentless hack like Tim Urban or ultra-weak Andrew Garcia.

When the judges, after much passionate deliberation, announced they were going to grant Big Mike the save, we breathed a hefty sigh of relief. For a contestant like Michael Lynche to go home before Tim Urban, Andrew Garcia or Aaron Kelly would just be seriously painful.

We can’t help but feel America got it all wrong this week with the bottom three lineup. Not only should Michael Lynche never have been there, but Tim Urban and Aaron Kelly absolutely should have been in the bottom two. Urban because he’s sucked his way through the whole season and Kelly because his “Long and Winding Road” this week was torturous to listen to.

Just goes to show, however, that one bad week can make or break you on American Idol. Let’s just hope Crystal Bowersox doesn’t become the victim of one of those bad weeks now that the judges have lost their ability to save anyone else from elimination.

Michael Lynche Tops the American Idol Top 8 Men

Michael Lynche, affectionately known as ‘Big Mike’, put the other top eight men of American Idol to shame Wednesday night. Lynche’s rendition of “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell was by far the standout performance of the evening. But how did the rest of the American Idol guys do? Here’s our ranking of the American Idol men’s performances for the evening.

8. Andrew Garcia: “Genie In a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera – First off, what the hell was up with this song choice? So not suitable for Garcia or his voice. We’re rather disappointed because Garcia was kind of growing on us until this performance. It was bland, boring and lacked any personal touch to make it stand out.

7. Todrick Hall: “Somebody to Love” by Queen – First off, we just have to say, if you are going to dare to do a Queen song, you better damn well rock it hard. Although it wasn’t too terrible by the end, the beginning was so rough it made us cringe. Regardless, it was a mediocre performance at best and messy all the way through. Plenty of folks will probably disagree, but we’re tired of Hall and ready for him to go.

6. Aaron Kelly: “I’m Already There” by Lonestar – Sure, he’s cute, but would he really be star material without his looks? We don’t think so and this performance just reinforces that belief. Not a great song choice at all for Kelly and we agree with Kara DioGuardiÂ that it didn’t fit his age.

5. Lee Dewyze: “Fireflies” by Owl City – Dewyze has a decent voice but it’s the same old same old every damn week. Dewyze needs to break out of his shell and really “wow” folks with something new, unique and powerful – or he’s a goner.

4. Casey James: “You’ll Think of Me” by Keith Urban – If James’ intention was to put the audience to sleep, he nearly succeeded with us. James needs to really connect with the audience, dig for better song choices and put some real power into his performances.

3. Alex Lambert: “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne – Where’s the passion boys? That’s what we’re asking of most of the male contestants this year and Alex Lambert in particular. The song wasn’t terrible, but it lacked any real emotional oomph. Lambert also still just gives off this vibe of being entirely uncomfortable on the stage. Boy needs to chill out and get in love with the music. Then he might actually be a real contender.

2. Tim Urban: “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley – This is one of our all time favorite songs, so we have very high standards when it comes to anyone doing a cover of it. Urban certainly couldn’t touch the original version of the song, but it wasn’t all that bad. Certainly we think it was Urban’s best performance of the season so far.

1. Michael Lynche: “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell – There is no doubt Michael Lynche blew it out of the water with this Maxwell cover of Kate Bush‘s song. It was absolutely a fabulous song choice for Big Mike’s big voice and we agree with Ellen DeGeneres that Lynche’s performance was entirely “beautiful”. Although we didn’t quite turn on the waterworks like Kara, we did feel a bit misty-eyed watching Lynche work it. We are so glad Michael Lynche wasn’t eliminated from the show as all those rumors claimed he was. He’s our definite favorite of the guys so far this season.

American Idol Disqualified Contestant Chris Golightly Still Fighting to Return

American Idol contestant Chris Golightly is still fighting to return to the show after being disqualified after reaching the Top 24 in the competition. Even American Idol judge Simon Cowell expressed surprise over Golightly’s elimination from the show and vowed to “find out what the reason is” behind the decision to boot him.

“I honestly don’t have a clue why he’s been removed from the competition,” Simon Cowell said Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Times. “I’m guessing it’s some sort of technical reason, but it’s a shame for him. He needed this opportunity.” Cowell encouraged Golightly to try out for his upcoming U.S. version of The X Factor.

Chris Golightly was reportedly disqualified from the Top 24 over an issue stemming from a previous boy band contract he had with Dream Projects Entertainment. Lawrence Franklin, Golightly’s previous manager, told American Idol producers at 19 Entertainment that he was still under contract with his company.

Golightly said the old contract expired before he auditioned for American Idol and was eventually able to acquire proof of his contract release. Sadly, it was already too late toÂ prevent his removal from the show. The show’s producers replaced Golightly with Tim Urban in the Top 24. Franklin later apologized for the confusion over the old contract that led to Golightly’s elimination.

Chris Golightly has been fighting to return to American Idol since he received the phone call telling him he had been disqualified from the competition. So far, however, he says “nothing has progressed” in his effort to get back on the show. “This is not fair; I don’t know what to do,” Golightly told USA Today.

Golightly, who gave up the lease on his apartment to participate in American Idol, is devastated over his disqualification. “I’ve had such bad luck, growing up in the system, living in foster homes all my life. … I’ve never tried to use it as a crutch, but when does the pain end and the sunshine begin?”

Chris Golightly Disqualified from American Idol Top 24

American Idol contestant Chris Golightly will not be moving on to the finals of the reality show after all. Golightly was allegedly disqualified from the American Idol Top 24 over a contract issue.

“It has been determined that Chris Golightly is ineligible to continue in the competition,” Fox said in a press release. “American Idol contestant Tim Urban has replaced Golightly as part of the Top 24.”

Golightly reportedly had a contract with a boy band that he claims expired in 2009, according to JoesPlaceBlog.com. His previous manager allegedly believed he was still under that contract. Unfortunately for Golightly, the contract release didn’t turn up until after he’d already been kicked out of the American Idol Top 24.

Interestingly, it was not Chris Golightly who was the subject of disqualification buzz earlier this month. American Idol hopeful Michael Lynche was the talk of the tabloids earlier in the month over rumors he was eliminated from the Top 24. Supposedly, Lynche was disqualified because his father leaked the news he had made the Top 24 on American Idol to the press.

Considering how much face time Michael Lynche got this week on the show, it looks like those rumors may have been nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Nothing is certain, however, until the American Idol Top 24 actually take to the stage before a live audience to duke it out in the finals.
