First Look at New Superman Henry Cavill from Man of Steel

Warner Bros. has released the first official photo of new Superman Henry Cavill, who definitely lives up to the superhero’s nickname and the movie title: Man of Steel. Director Zack Snyder has said he was going for a ‘bigger, muscular, retro’ Superman and Henry Cavill certainly seems to fit the bill.

What we want to know after seeing this photo of Henry Cavill as Superman with muscles bulging all over the place is how is this guy going to convincingly portray nerdy, bumbling Clark Kent? Seriously!

Cavill, 28, will portray Superman and his alter ego opposite Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Superman’s adoptive parents. In what is just, in my opinion, weird casting, Russell Crowe will play Superman’s birth father, Jor-El, and Julia Ormand will play his biological mother. Laurence Fishburne has been tapped to play Daily Planet newspaper editor in chief Perry White.

Man of Steel is due for release in 2013.

Christopher Nolan Tapped to Mentor New Superman Movie

Warner Bros has reportedly tapped filmmaker and producer Christopher Nolan to mentor development on the studio’s next Superman movie. Nolan is not expected to actually direct the film, but will instead serve as the ‘mentor’ behind the project.

According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros hopes Chris Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) will be able to steer the new Superman movie into the kind of box office success enjoyed by his Batman franchise films.

Warner Bros. is reportedly still trying to find a clear direction for the film after the studio’s previous Superman remake, Superman Returns, failed to make much of a splash. An unidentified insider reportedly told Deadline.com the new film will “not be a follow-up” to Warner Bros. previous Superman attempt, which makes it likely the new Superman movie will go in an entirely new direction. Word is so far that Brandon Routh may or may not be showing up in the next film. We hope it’s not, because frankly he was such a generic guy that he bored us to tears. We don’t need Christopher Reeves light, we need a new, darker, tougher kind of Superman.

Considering Christopher Nolan managed to make the Batman franchise into a huge success at the box office and his fondness for the whole ‘dark, tough’ vibe, we’re excited to see what he can do with Superman in a ‘mentoring’ capacity. We’d rather see him actually directing the new film, but we’ll take Nolan any way we can get him when it comes to making awesome movies inspired by legendary comic book characters.
