Olympic luger Nodar Kumaristashvili died Friday following a horrific training run crash when he lost control of his sled and flew off the track into a metal post. The Olympic luger was estimated to be travelling more than 90 mph when he crashed.
21-year-old Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died on Friday from head injuries sustained during the tragic crash. Kumaritashvili was representing the former Soviet republic of Georgia at the 2010 Olympic Games.
Video of the luge crash shows Kumaritashvili losing control of his sled at top speed and flying off the sled over the retaining wall of the track. The Olympic luger struck a metal pole. Efforts to save him were unsuccessful and he was declared dead around noon, PDT.
The Olympic luge track this year has been touted as the fastest in the world – too fast for some competitors. There have been a number of other luge crashes, including one involving Romanian luger Violeta Stramaturaru, who was knocked unconscious after a crash during a training run.
“I think they are pushing it a little too much,” Australia’s Hannah Campbell-Pegg said Thursday night after nearly crashing on the luge track. “To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we’re crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives.”
