Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has confounded some and angered others with his controversial Tweets about the death of Osama bin Laden. The 23-year-old NFL player apparently was not pleased with the mass celebrations of bin Laden’s killing that broke out across the country on Sunday night.
“What kind of person celebrates death?” Mendenhall posted on his Twitter feed after President Barack Obama announded the death of Osama bin Laden and celebrations broke out across the country in response. “It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…”
If that wasn’t enough to rile up half the country against Mendenhall, he went on to share his doubts that the World Trade Center was not brought down by terrorist controlled airplanes at all.
“We’ll never know what really happened,” Mendenhall said. “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.” The Tweet was in responsoe to a Tweet by Illinois basketball player Dominique Keller, who basically said he was not convinced Osama bin Laden was behind the 9/11 attacks, according to LarryBrownSports.com.
Steelers President Art Rooney II posted a response statement on the team’s website. â€œI have not spoken with Rashard so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments,â€ Rooney said. â€œThe entire Steelersâ€™ organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can only hope this leads to our troops coming home soon.â€
Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow was already in progress on an Osama bin Laden movie project when the news came on Sunday that the 9/11 terrorist mastermind was dead. The Osama bin Laden movie, reportedly titled Kill bin Laden is now expected to be fast-tracked to completion to take advantage of the raised level of public interest in such a project.
Kathryn Bigelow, winner of the best director Academy Award for The Hurt Locker last year, had allegedly launched into casting for the film just recently. The movie was reportedly to be based on an unsuccessful previous attempt by U.S. forces to kill or capture Osama bin Laden. The new version would likely be expanded to at least include a ‘celebratory ending’ according to MonstersandCritics.com.
Star Wars actor Joel Edgerton is allegedly being courted for a lead role in the Osama bin Laden movie.Â Kathryn Bigelow is partnered with screenwriting collaborator Mark Boal on the film. Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle chief Larry Ellison, is reportedly on board to assist with funding for the project.
An adaption of the non-fiction book Jawbreaker, another bin Laden related story, was also in the works is reportedly in limbo at Paramount currently, according to Ugo.com.

The mastermind of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 and the fall of the Twin Towers in New York, Osama bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces against a mansion in Abbottabad near the Pakistan capital of Islamabad. USA Today reports the U.S. used a variety of methods to confirm the identity of Osama bin Laden. He was reportedly identified by a woman believed to be one of his wives and visually identified by members of the raiding squad and through a facial recognition program. A DNA test has also reportedly been done to compare the identity of the body against the DNA of bin Laden’s family members allegedly collected since 9/11.
President Obama ordered a “lightning raid” against the al Qaeda hideaway instead of an air bombing run because he “wanted proof” of bin Laden’s death, “not just a pile of rubble,” a law enforcement source told the New York Daily News. The New York Daily News has published photos of the bloody aftermath of the raid taken from an ABC News video.
The news that Osama bin Laden was dead prompted many to speculate a strong spike President Obama’s approval rating with the American public. Something the President could no doubt use right now in his bid to be re-elected.

A U.S. official said bin Laden was buried at sea because “finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world’s most wanted terrorist would have been difficult.”
