Dame Helen Mirren won a career achievement award at the Power 100 Women in Entertainment Breakfast this week, and she took the opportunity at the podium to voice her feelings about the entertainment industry and what she feels is still a heavy bias toward male-oriented filmmaking.
Mirren claims that there are too many movies aimed at young men and their sexual desires, and that Hollywood focuses too much on women for their physical attractiveness. Â She went on to mention that in her extensive experience, a lot of mediocre male actors have been spared at the expense of female ones who may have had more actual acting talent, but couldn’t sustain careers because they didn’t make the cut in terms of sex appeal.
