Things Could Get Dicey with Gervais at Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais will be making a repeat performance as the host of the Golden Globes and while fans are thrilled, there’s some concern he may not … toe the line. Gervais hosted the event last year and his appearance has been called “lightening in a bottle.” Even he’s been quoted as saying there’s no way he could pull off a repeat performance. He managed to say what millions were thinking, offend people who greenlit many of the project, and generally bit the hand the fed him. No wonder he’s nervous he won’t be able to do it again.

He did say he’d like to improve on his 2011 performance – by making is 2012 appearance more outrageous than before. Said Gervais: ”Not sure if I’m flattered that they trust me or insulted that they trust me. Either way…they shouldn’t trust me.”

It could really go either way. On the one hand, this has the potentially to go so horribly wrong and blow up in the producers’ faces … on the other hand it could be a huge viewership boost for NBC as people tune in to see what Gervais will do or say next.

The timing also will be good publicity for the comedian’s new TV venture, “Life’s Too Short” which will make its U.S. debut on HBO in early 2012.

Risky jokes at the Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais did a fantastic job of hosting the Golden Globe Awards last night, always pushing the limits with jokes that sometimes rubbed people the wrong way. At one point, Gervais told a joke implying that certain Scientologists in the Hollywood community were gay actors pretending to be straight, which elicited a mixed reaction from the crowd. Gervais wasn’t the only one taking chances with humor, though.

Robert De Niro accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Hollywood Foreign Press, and during his acceptance speech he joked that a lot of the members of the foreign press had been deported, “along with most of the waiters,” he added. Yikes.

‘The Office’ Star Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes

British comic Ricky Gervais, creator and star of the original version of The Office, has been tapped to host the next Golden Globe Awards on January 17. Gervais, who recently starred in the film comedy The Invention of Lying, said hosting awards shows is a “thankless task.”

“What’s the best that could happen?” Gervais said about award show hosting gigs. “You’re funny? You should be. The worst that can happen is they say: Worst host ever!” Gervais was persuaded against his better judgment to sign on as Golden Globes host anyway.

“Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down,” Gervais said.

Well, the Academy Awards certainly pumped up the volume and improved their ratings last time around by bringing in Aussie Hugh Jackman as host. Maybe bringing in a Brit will help the Golden Globes crawl out of its dark hole as well. Sorry American comedians – just like a lot of us normal folks out there – you’ve been outsourced.
