She may have gone on hiatus due to some health troubles and throat surgery but Adele didn’t take a hit in her popularity this year. The British singer was nominated for six Grammy Awards last night including for album of the year, record of the year, and song of the year. But it’s Kanye West leading the pack with the highest number of nominations: seven, and many for his collaboration with Jay-Z.
Close behind were the Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars, each with six nominations. Bon Iver, Nicki Minaj, Mumford & Sons and Rihanna each earned four nominations.
Here’s a list of some of the top noms – some new-comers and a few stand-by favorites
For record of the year, nominees were Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”), Bruno Mars (“Grenade”), Bon Iver (“Holocene”), Mumford and Sons (“The Cave”) and Katy Perry (“Firework”).
Album nods go to Adele (21), the Foo Fighters (Wasting Light), Lady Gaga (Born this Way), Bruno Mars (Doo-Wops & Hooligans), and Rihanna (Loud).
Vying for Song of the Year: Kanye West and Rihanna (“All of the Lights”), Mumford and Sons (“The Cave”), Bruno Mars (“Grenade”), Bon Iver (“Holocene”) and Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”).
Yes, for some reason Rihanna keeps sneaking her way in there; hopefully this is the year that someone with real talent trumps her pop appeal.
Singer Chris Brown, most well-known for being a girlfriend-beater with anger management issues, showed that his true colors haven’t charged after a meltdown on the Good Morning America set this week. Â Brown was a guest on the show, primarily there to promote his new album, but Robin Roberts decided instead to question him about his assault on Rihanna, the subsequent restraining order, and the fact that the restraining order has recently been reduced.
Brown returned to his dressing room after the interview and started screaming at people, eventually throwing a chair through a window, raining glass down onto the busy intersection below. Â Good to see he’s turned over a new leaf.
They seem like an unlikely couple, and they’re not officially together or anything (yet), but Rihanna and Colin Farrell have been texting each other, and apparently it’s getting racier and racier. Â The pair met when they were both on the Graham Norton show at the same time, and they seemed to click so well that they decided to exchange phone numbers.
Rihanna decided to take charge of the situation and started sending Colin flirty message that are now bordering on downright sexy. Â Colin is said to be flattered, and since he and Rihanna are both single, who knows? Â They might just go for it. Â They’d certainly make a cute couple.
Last night’s American Music Award ceremony was one of the best I can remember in several years. Â A lot of great things happened on that stage, including a great performance from Taylor Swift, who looked completely different with straight hair.
Rihanna’s opening medley was a mixture of fun and serious, but later in the show New Kids on the Block teamed up with Backstreet Boys to keep it all light and fun, giving a hint of what their tour will be like next year. Â For me, though, the performance of the night was the Black Eyed Peas – even though I don’t have a lot of love for Fergie, I have to admit their future-tastic neon performance was pretty cool, if not a bit dated.
R&B diva Rihanna has finally confessed Los Angeles Dodgers star Matt Kemp is indeed her boyfriend. Rihanna and Kemp denied they were dating earlier this year, saying they were just friends.
Back in February, both Rihanna and Matt Kemp blew off rumors they were an item after the two were spotted together in Dubai and Mexico. Kemp denied he was with Rihanna, proclaiming that he was “single” and “not dating anyone.” He called Rihanna a “good friend” but insisted there was nothing more to their relationship.
Liar, liar! Well, now Rihanna has let the official cat out of the bag and confirmed the two are hooking up. In an interview on Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show, Rihanna said Kemp is her “boyfriend” but added the relationship is “nothing too serious” yet. “It’s new and it’s fun… I don’t want anything nuts that’s gonna take up so much of my energy and time in a bad way.”
As for whether Matt Kemp will accompany Rihanna on her tour, the sexy singer said he’s a bit too busy to follow her around like a puppy dog. “No,” Rihanna told Ryan Seacrest, “he actually has a job like me.”
Matt Kemp is – as far as we know – the first boyfriend for Rihanna since she broke up with Chris Brown last year. Let’s hope this relationship ends up in a much nicer place than the last one!
Chris Brown has followed in the footsteps of Disney star Miley Cyrus by deleting his Twitter account. Brown recently used his Twitter feed to rant against stores he claims are “blackballing” his Graffiti album.
On his Twitter feed, Chris Brown recently blasted stores for allegedly failing to stock his album. Brown posted: “im tired of this shit. major stores r blackballing my cd. not stockin the shelves and lying to consumers. what the fuck do i gotta do…” Brown also posted that the music industry is being unfair to him over the whole Rihanna domestic abuse incident.
Brown reportedly based his accusations partially on a visit to a Walmart store where he could not find Graffiti on the shelves. He claims employees at the store didn’t know anything about the album. MTV News, however, reported the Walmart had previously sold out of the album and simply had not restocked yet. Billboard.biz reports the album is actually underselling at most stores and many places are overstocked with Chris Brown cds they aren’t moving.
Chris Brown deleted his Twitter account on Monday after posting a final Tweet to fans. “I wanna thank all my fans for their support,” Brown wrote. “I love yall. Goodbye!”
Britain’s Got Talent star and YouTube darling Susan Boyle flew to the top of the U.S. charts with the release of her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream. The album was the best U.S. opening from a female artist since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991.
Susan Boyle also topped the British album sales charts earlier this week. Boyle’s album sold a record-setting 701,000 copies sold, even beating out American Idol alumni Adam Lambert‘s debut album, which came in at number three. Andrea Bocelli‘s My Christmas took the number two spot.
I Dreamed a Dream slugged out Eminem‘s previous record sales this year for Relapse, making it the biggest debut album of 2009 by far.
In a week that featured new albums by Lambert, Rihanna and Lady Gaga, pulling the number one spot is quite a coup for Susan Boyle.
