The longest serving member of Congress, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd, has been hospitalized in serious condition. A statement released on Sunday said 92-year-old Byrd was still “seriously ill” after being admitted to a Washington area hospital last week.
West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd was originally hospitalized on suspicion of heat exhaustion and severe dehydration and expected to be released within a few days. In a press statement released on Sunday, his office said “other conditions have developed which has resulted in his condition being described as ‘serious.'”
Byrd is currently the longest-serving member of Congress on record, having served more than 57 years. He has been elected to nine terms in the Senate after serving six years in the U.S. House. Byrd has never lost an election. He was previously hospitalized three times in 2009.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
