Based on the hit Broadway musical, the new Rock of Ages movie hitting theaters on June 15 looks like a lot of fun… if you can get past the idea of Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise as an aging, long-haired, pimped-up rock star.
Personally, I just don’t see Tom Cruise as any kind of rock star, much less the ‘god of rock’ he’s supposed to be in the Rock of Ages movie. Something about Tom Cruise is just so far from a grungy, hard rocking, music icon that my mind has real trouble going there. Of course, the movie is a comedy for the most part, so I guess it’s okay to laugh at Tom Cruise in the part — especially those shirtless, tattooed scenes with the fake weave going on.
As for Tom Cruise singing, well, the Rock of Ages movie trailer video gives us only the tiniest taste of his vocal prowess… or lack thereof. Most of the singing in the trailer is done by the rest of the cast, leaving his bit right up until the very end. The second of actual Tom Cruise singing in the movie trailer is so overproduced it is hard to tell it is a human voice and not a robot. Well, or maybe Tom Cruise just sounds like a robot even when singing…
Still, even with my obvious dislike of Tom Cruise as the character of Stacee Jaxx instead of some kick-ass real rocker (or Broadway star) with a rough and ready voice, the Rock of Ages movie still looks rather entertaining. Then again, I’m just a sucker for musical theater in whatever form it comes in.
The Rock of Ages movie, directed by Hairspray‘s Adam Shankman, also stars Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Diego Boneta. The film is due in theaters on June 15.
