An enormous solar storm of radiation is currently bombarding the planet, but so far it has created few disruptions. The wave of plasma and solar radiation striking Earth was spawned by two massive solar flares thrown off by the sun on Tuesday.
The two powerful solar flares launched a blast wave of plasma and charged particles directly toward Earth. The coronal mass ejection, or CME, travelled at a wild 4 million mph, slamming the planet early Thursday morning. The march 2012 solar storm is the largest in the past five years.

The giant solar flare is on a direct path to smack into our planet. “It’s hitting us right in the nose,” said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist Joe Kunches, jokingly calling it the sun’s version of “Super Tuesday.”

Â The huge solar flare was rated an M-9 class eruption, which is just one level below the most powerful typle, an X-class flare. As a result of the flare, the earth is being bombarded by three waves of a solar storm from the sun. First the planet was hit by electromagnetic radiation, then a flood of protons and, finally, a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME struck the Earth’s magnetic field on Tuesday at approximately 10AM EST.
