Fox is really hoping you love their new Steven Spielberg post-apocalyptic, dinosaur era drama Terra Nova, because otherwise they just spend a whole load of cash for nothing. Fox’s pilot for Terra Nova, costing an estimated $15 million, is one of the most expensive ever made.
The Terra Nova premiere is one of the most highly anticipated of the fall TV season. Some have called it Lost plus dinosaurs and Fox is certainly hoping Terra Nova will be at least as successful as that hit series. We can only hope that in the midst of all those amazing special effects, Terra Nova will also feature strong characters and an engaging storyline that doesn’t get bogged down in too many plotlines and ‘surprise’ twists.
Terra Nova opens in 2149 and the Earth is a bloody mess of smog, exhausted resources and a failing planet. Everyone wears masks to breathe. A strict two-child policy is in force to keep a check on the already overpopulated public. However, Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara) and wife Elisabeth (Shelley Conn) have violated this law by having a third child. When the state comes to take away the spare kid, Jim Shannon gets violent and is sent off to jail for five years.
While Jim Shannon is in prison, his wife is recruited to join the Terra Nova colony. Not to travel to a distant world, but to travel 85 million years back in time to basically restart the human race. The Shannons seize the opportunity to stay together and Jim, Elisabeth, Josh (Landon Liboiron), Maddy (Naomi Scott) and Zoe (Alana Mansour) head back to the prehistoric age to battle for survival in a strange world of dinosaurs and renegades.
Now all that remains is to wait and see if Terra Nova can live up to the massive hype the Steven Spielberg-helmed series has received so far. Will you be tuning in?
