A Nightmare on Elm Street has screamed its way to the top of the weekend box office, raking in over $32 million so far in ticket sales. The Nightmare on Elm Street 2010 remake has pretty much already recouped the film’s production costs of just over $30 million.
While the new Nightmare on Elm Street was a slamming success at the weekend box office, the other wide release debut of the weekend, Furry Vengeance, was a total bomb. The Brendan Fraser-starring comedy took in only an abysmal $6.5 million, barely squeaking into fifth place at the box office.
Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon fell to second place this weekend, but still brought in a solid $10.8 million. The film has so far earned over $192 million in the six weeks since it debuted. Date Night, starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell, managed to hold on to third place with $7.6 million, earning around $73 million overall so far. The Back-Up Plan, starring Jennifer Lopez, looks to finish in fourth place with about $7.2 million.
Although frankly we think the new Nightmare on Elm Street, starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger, doesn’t live up to the original – it’s not terrible. If the original Nightmare on Elm Street had never existed, we might even give the new one decent props. Unfortunately, the original was just too damn awesome for any remake to not feel like a cheap knockoff.
Still, horror fans will probably get a kick out of the new Nightmare – and old Nightmare fans can amuse themselves pointing out all the ways the original was more kick-ass than the remake.
