“He spit on me, in my face,” Houston told Oprah. The abuse didn’t all come from Bobby Brown’s side, however. Houston said Brown “got hit on the head three times by me” after slapping her once.

Houston credits her mother, Cissy Houston, with finally saving her from the spiral of abuse and drug addiction in her relationship with Bobby Brown. “[She] said, ‘I’m not losing you to the world. I’m not losing you to Satan. … I want my daughter back.'” Houston says her mother and family staged an intervention to get her away from Brown and put her on the path to recovery.

Oprah talked about the interview with Whitney Houston on Access Hollywood, saying the interview will “leave you gasping.”

Whitney Houston’s appearance on the season premiere of Oprah marks the first time in seven years the music superstar has sat down for an interview. Part one of the Whitney Houston interview airs on Oprah on Monday and continues on Tuesday.
