World Wrestling Entertainment has been trying hard to step away from homophobia and its unfortunate public image of hate toward gay people, but given how old habits die hard, sometimes it’s one step forward and eight million steps back. Â Over the weekend, Michael Cole, a WWE announcer, tweeted a homophobic slur intended as an insult for a fellow announcer.
He quickly realized his mistake, though, deleted the tweet, and replaced it with an apology. Â Reps for the WWE say that Cole has just slurred his way into an anti-homophobia training session, intended to teach members of the WWE that hate speech is, you know, hateful. Â Imagine that.
