Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day will join The Voice season 3 as a mentor when the show returns to NBC in September. The network announced the addition of the Green Day rocker to The Voice season 3 cast on Thursday. Armstrong will join Team Christina Aguilera as a ‘mentor’ to her team’s contestants.
In a press statement, Billie Joe Armstrong said he and his family are a fan of The Voice and doing the show is “a lot of fun.” The Voice season 3 began production in June; Armstrong started taping for the show on Wednesday. The show staff welcomed him officially on Twitter in an announcement to fans: “Welcome Billie Joe (@BJAofficial) to #TeamXtina! We are ready to rock out in Season 3.”
Armstrong said in a press statement that The Voice is special because “it’s not molding artists, it’s just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover.”
The Voice season 3 will premiere on NBC September 10th. In addition to Christina Aguilera, The Voice season 3 will also feature returning coaches Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green and Blake Shelton.
Other mentors who have signed on for The Voice season 3 are Rob Thomas (Team Cee Lo Green); Mary J. Blige (Team Adam Levine); and Michael Buble (Team Blake Shelton).
