Weird News: Mythbusters Cannonball Misfire Tears Through House

A stunt by the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters went horribly wrong during a recent taping in Dublin, California. A cannonball fired by the show’s crew misfired and ended up crashing through a house, tearing right past a sleeping family. The Mythbusters cannonball caused quite a bit of damage, but thankfully no one was injured in the weird incident.

Mythbusters, which airs on the Discovery Channel, is known for weird experiments involving everything from whether a car balanced on the edge of a cliff can topple over if a bird perches on the front end to if is impossible for a blindfolded person to travel in a straight line. While these stunts are often amusing, this time things could have easily taken a tragic turn. During a recent filming to examine whether other items shot out of a cannon would be as effective as a cannonball went all kinds of bad when the projectile launched by the crew went astray going at bullet speed and could have ended up killing someone.

“This cannonball was supposed to pass through several barrels of water and a cinder block wall to slow its inertia,” said J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department said in a press statement. “When the shot was fired, it misfired. The cannon lifted.”

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the cantaloupe-sized cannonball missed its target and flew 700 yards into the Tassajra Creek neighborhood of Dublin, California. The Mythbusters cannonball flew past children returning home from school, crashed through the front door of a house, tore through a bedroom where a man, woman and child were sleeping, crossed a six-lane road, whacked another house and finally slammed into a minivan.

“Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy,” Alameda County Sheriff’s Department spokesman J.D. Nelson said. “You wouldn’t think it was possible.”

Frankly, we’re pretty astounded by the wild path of the cannonball ourselves and grateful no one was killed!

Jasbir Gill, who owns the minivan where the cannonball finally impacted, said he and his children had only exited the vehicle a few minutes before. “It’s scary,” Gill said, according to the Kansas City Star. “I kind of looked inside and seen a big old cannonball. And I had just got out of the van five minutes earlier. I’m glad my kids weren’t inside the van. So lucky.”

A spokesman for Mythbusters said the producers have used the cannon over 50 times without any issues, according to the Kansas City Star. “They’re very sorry that this happened. And they have safety measures that are in place,” said a consultant for the show. “They did have a misfire. And they have insurance for these kinds of things.”
