Will Ferrell will be returning as the lead iconic character in Anchorman 2: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. The comedian announced the Anchorman sequel on Conan last night in a surprise appearance as the title character from the upcoming film.
Will Ferrell strolled onto the set of Conan last night as the character of Ron Burgundy, complete with burgundy leisure suit and loud, striped tie. After a humorous, over-the-top flute solo, Ferrell told host Conan O’Brien he looked “like someone put a bright red fright wig on a skeleton and chucked it out of a helicopter.”
After dissing on Conan’s appearance and exchanging lewd banter, Will Ferrell finally got to the point of his visit. “I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas,” he said.
“To my friends, in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England … as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel for Anchorman. It is official, there will be a sequel to Anchorman.”
Announcement made, Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy sashayed backwards off the stage accompanied by himself on the flute once again.
The Anchorman 2 sequel is expected to feature much of the original cast and crew of the 2004 hit comedic film, including director Adam McKay, producer Judd Apatow and actors Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. Ferrell and McKay are expected to co-write the Anchorman sequel script and production should start at the end of the year. No word yet on whether Ferrell’s romantic lead partner, Christina Applegate as Veronica Corningstone, will be returning as well.
The original Anchorman movie grossed more than $91 million worldwide. We’re sure Paramount and Will Ferrell are hoping they can top that number at the box office by a nice margin.
