Tonight on American Idol, it will finally come down to the last two contestants — Scotty McCreery versus Lauren Alaina. While it looks like the odds seem skewed in McCreery’s favor according to most of the predicitions out there, we all know that on American Idol you just never know who the hell will end up on top.
After the shocking eliminations of several top favorites this season against all reason, we’re left wondering why we should even try to predict the newest American Idol winner. This is a show where Taylor Hicks — bless him — should never have won and Adam Lambert lost out to that rather bland boy whose name we can never remember.
Still, it should be interesting to watch the final showdown between American Idol’s unlikely top two this season. I’d find it kind of fun if the little blond girl who nearly crawled into Steven Tyler’s lap during her first audition actually managed to stomp all over smirky country boy.
Then again, we haven’t seen a woman win American Idolsince 2007. And we’ve had some girls during those past years with pipes way bigger & better than Alaina’s.
I’ll be watching tonight but honestly it doesn’t really matter to me who wins this time around. James Durbin is the guy we’ll be buying records from at the end of the day. But that’s just me. What’s your opinion on who you think will take home the top prize in the American Idol results — and who really should have?
After my last post about the American Idol Top 3, one commentor took offense to my classification that both Hailey Reinhart and Lauren Alaina were both blond and it really didn’t seem to matter much who ended up in the finale. After last night’s performances on American Idol, I stand by both statements.
They are both blond. That is not an insult to their intelligence, just a descriptive statement about their appearance. And honestly, I really just couldn’t care less which of them ends up in the American Idol finals. Although personally I’d prefer the two girls than having to listen to Scotty McCreery mangle a song like “She Believes in Me” ever again.
I have nothing against Scotty McCreery, really, he seems like a fine enough guy and a decent enough singer. I just can’t really imagine wanting to buy even one whole album of his voice sounding pretty much exactly the same on every single song that ever passed his lips. Okay, I admit to an anti-country bias, but I love some Bonnie Raitt and Garth Brooks, so it isn’t just that.
If I had to pick a favorite performance from American Idollast night, it would be probably be Haley Reinhart on “What Is and What Should Never Be”, although she didn’t do that badly on “Rhiannon” either. (The wind machine was a bit much though…) As for Haley falling on the stage, I don’t really think it hurt or helped her in the voting arena. It happens, it’s not a big deal, whatever. Regardless of the spill, Haley comes out the winner of the night in my opinion.
Still, Lauren Alaina wasn’t that far behind Haley even if she did miss a key change on “If I Die Young”. However, the songs I just couldn’t stand last night both came from the ladies too. Alaina on “I Hope You Dance” just made me compare her unfavorably the whole time to Lee Ann Womack. As for Reinhart doing Alanis Morisette… it was just unspeakable and I am keeping my mouth shut.
More than likely it will end up being Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart duking it out in the American Idol final two. Still, I kind of hope Lauren Alaina will sneak in there and knock Scotty out just to wipe that little smirk off his face he’s had ever since James Durbin got booted.
Lady Gaga and American Idol? Now that’s a combo I can’t wait to watch. What will the woman who isn’t afraid to wear a dress made out of meat say to the American Idolfinal four? Unfortunately since it is a ‘family’ show, we’re sure there probably won’t be any flank steak bikinis going on, but still, we are hoping Lady Gaga will be more entertaining than the boringly drab mentors they usually feature. Although, hell, ANYONE would have to be better than former Idol mentor Miley Cyrus. I mean, really? Miley Cyrus?
Although we are always happy to jump on board the Gaga train, we do have to wonder why on Earth the show producers decided to have her mentor during the week the contestants are required to perform Leiber & Stoller tunes. Then again, why the hell does American Idol keep dragging out these incredibly outdated and overdone themes? Is “Jailhouse Rock” or “Hound Dog” really the kind of music that is going to set teenage hearts pounding and launch the career of the next singing sensation? Could we at least move the music themes to sometime after the majority of the contestants were actually born?
Of all the remaining contestants, we can kind of see James Durbin having a little Lady Gaga in him there somewhere. Lauren Alainamight wish she did, but sorry hun, it’s just not happening. As for Haley Reinhart and Scotty Mcreery, well, we just want to watch Gaga’s face while they are singing. Just for funsies. Speaking of Haley though, we think it is a shame she didn’t learn enough from that fantastic duet with Casey Abrams. THAT is the kind of music that makes her voice sound heavenly divine. Her pipes were made for that genre. Too bad she really doesn’t quite seem to get that yet.
James Durbin for the win. Still calling it. Even with the echo of Adam Lambert hanging over his head.
